SOTS Positive COVID-19 Exposure Policy

In January 2022, the CDC issued guidance on how long you need to quarantine after a positive COVID-19 test or contact with someone who tests positive. COVID-19 transmission occurs early in the course of illness, generally in the 1-2 days prior to onset of symptoms and the 2-3 days after. For those with symptoms, best practice would be to wait until day 5 after exposure before testing. Exposure is defined as being in direct contact longer than 15 minutes in a 24 hour period with someone who tests positive for COVID-19.

For testing positive for COVID-19:

  • Quarantine for 5 days
  • Followed by 5 days of wearing a mask when around others.
  • Must have 24 hours with no fever without the use of fever-reducing medications to return.
  • Can provide proof of negative COVID-19 test after day 5 to eliminate the mask requirement.

For primary or secondary exposure to COVID-19:

If unvaccinated and are more than 6 months from a positive COVID event:

  • Quarantine for 5 days followed by strict mask use for an additional 5 days.
  • Must have 24 hours with no fever without the use of fever-reducing medications to return.
  • Can provide proof of negative COVID-19 test after day 5 to eliminate the mask requirement.
  • If vaccinated, and are more than six (6) months out from their second mRNA dose (or more than 2 months after the J&J vaccine):
  • Quarantine for 5 days followed by strict mask use for an additional 5 days.
  • Must have 24 hours with no fever without the use of fever-reducing medications to return.
  • Can provide proof of negative COVID-19 test after day 5 to eliminate the mask requirement.

If vaccinated with 2 mRNA dose and boosted:

  • Do not need to be quarantined following an exposure
  • Should wear a mask for 10 days after the exposure.
  • Must have 24 hours with no fever without the use of fever-reducing medications to return.
